Social Prescribing
Our social prescribing progamme consists of a menu of activities, services and supports (local, county based and nationwide) provided for older people and promoted among health care professionals and service providers whose clients may benefit from participation in same.
In addition to practical services and supports that enhance both physical and mental health and wellbeing of participants, our services and group activities introduce participants to a whole new support structure, new friendships and companions, and activities that are designed to create a new sense of purpose, interest, and that boost confidence and esteem.
At local level we provide a range of services and activities including chiropody, audiologist, counsellor, reflexology, aromatherapy, to activities and programmes including exercise and activity classes, information sessions, creative and artistic programmes, social activities such as dances, tours, outings and social events. We also provide educational and lifelong learning initiatives and volunteering opportunities.
At County level (Meath) our AgeWell Programme offers a unique blend of care coordination for older people, combining peer based social engagement and mobile technology to improve health outcomes and wellbeing among older people, including identifying and reacting to issues before they escalate to something more serious, and ensuring the client receives the right care in the right place at the right time.
SeniorLine our national confidential listening and support service for older people provided by trained older volunteers is Ireland’s only peer-to-peer national service for older people. It provides emotional support to older people, and time talk and to work though their issues and concerns. Callers contact us because they are lonely; isolated; have family, income or health difficulties; may be depressed; anxious; suicidal; or suffering elder abuse.
Our aim is to enhance and compliment current medical treatments and options through a range of services and supports that impact positively on mental and physical health and wellbeing. To provide a holistic approach to health and ageing. To combat loneliness and isolation which can have a negative impact on mental health and well-being. To provide other benefits including enhanced self-esteem and confidence, a sense of achievement, enhanced mood, new interests, development of new friendships and social contacts, and benefit from the huge social support network of participants, clients and beneficiaries that Third Age provides.
